Walking & Cycling
Paxos is an ideal place for light trekking or mountain
biking. Tracks and foot paths take you to all parts of the island, usually
under shady olive trees, among proudly standing cypress trees, along side very
old dry stone walls, some times just over the sea, over the blue caves, always
past beautiful stone traditional houses and churches, gardens full of flowers
or orchards, most of the time leading to pebbled secluded beaches.
Very rarely one needs more than 2 hours of walking to reach a certain point.
Steep parts are very short and usually on the west side of the island. But
limestone cliffs are friable and rock falls are quite common. So, always
be careful where you sit.
The best informed and regularly up dated walking map
about Paxos so far is the Bleasdale “Walking Map of Paxos” based on original
survey material
by John and Joyce Bird and Peter Greaves, which is printed in the Isle
of Man
and is
currently in its 7nth edition. It is sold in every tourist agency on the
island and all profits go to the "Friends of The Ionian".
By the beginning of year 2004 all the island’s walking routes will be cleared
and officially signed by professional climbers as part of a program authorized
and financed by the Corfu Prefecture and the Paxos Municipality giving
to all of us – tourists and locals – the possibility to enjoy the natural
beauties
of Paxos through tracks, some of which have heard no human laughter for
more than 50 years.
Please treat the island with respect. Do not light fires! If the island
goes up in flames, there is no water to put it out. Do not litter!
Try to respect
the island’s fragile ecosystem, protect it any way you can, so it can
compensate you not only by fulfilling your expectations of peace, serenity
and natural
beauty, but also by offering the opportunity to meet some of the local
inhabitants (man and beast) and so experience a part of their simple
but enviable lifestyle.
